Abstract: It is not possible, in a short work like this, to write an exhaustive and detailed history of the Holy Infirmary. What I have tried to do here is to present a general account of the origin and growth of the Holy Infirmary and of how it adapted itself to the demands and requirements made upon it as it changed hands and functions at various points in time. I have also attempted to outline the pattern of the humanitarian services it has rendered to the Maltese community and to the numerous visitors from overseas who found shelter and solace within its walls since its erection four hundred years ago.
