Abstract: The importance of Malta in the Phoenician colonisation of the west Mediterranean has long been acknowledged, yet the extent of data from the archipelago and their potential to further our understanding of the processes of colonisation have never been fully investigated. The focus of this paper is on some of the mortuary evidence in the islands that can be traced to an Orientalising or Archaic period, prior to the 8th-7th century systematic migration from the Levant.
