| Abstract: | The main aims of this project are to give an idea of types of common pumps in use in pumping stations and industry and their mode of control. Choice of pumps is an important chapter in this project because it helps to select the correct pump and its control appropriate to its purpose. Also, a section on prime movers is mentioned and today this selection of what type of prime mover you use is very important because of the oil crises all over the world. Control is also of utmost importance since automatic control of pumping is also being introduced replacing attendants and hence cutting down running costs. Also, today most of the control is electronically and so emphases are made on introduction of power electronics in this field. One of the biggest factors in successful operation and maintenance of all classes and type of pumps is correct installation. Pumps which are correctly installed remain in suitable alignment for longer periods, develop fewer casing and flange leaks, vibrate less and require fewer overhauls. Higher maintenance costs and greater used of pumps in all types of plants make correct installation a must. A further gain derived from correct installation is the longer operating life secure from the pump. This is especially important with large pumps because their first costs may be high. Fewer overhauls and repairs mean that the pumps are in service, or available for service for longer periods. There are fewer losses from forced shutdowns during which plant production may cease. Improper installation can ruin a new pump in relatively short time. So, this project may help and clarify certain aspects regarding pumps and their application. |
