Abstract: It was thus that in 1860 Malta's first stamp valued at 1/2d and used only for local purposes came into existence. The figure was that of Queen Victoria, as seen in profile from a design by De La Ferte'. This was the beginning of the famous Malta Yellow Stamps which remained into existence up to 1885, a period of approximately 25 years. The year 1885, saw the first Malta definitive issue which as might be expected served the dual purpose for local and overseas correspondence. The move was as might have been expected, following the joining of Malta to the Universal Postal Union.
