Abstract: The number of migrants relocating to Malta has increased sharply in the last decade. A significant proportion of these migrants are Third Country Nationals (TCNs). In an effort to aid integration, TCNs may follow the ‘I Belong’ programme, a national programme containing a culture and a language component tailored for adult migrants living in Malta. TCNs who successfully complete the course are also given the possibility to apply for long-term residency in Malta. This study explores the thoughts, perceptions and experiences of students enrolled on the ‘I Belong’ Maltese language Stage 2 component with a focus on their language learning experience during the course and their exposure to Maltese. Through focus group interviews held with the same participants in the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the course, this research gives a voice to the participants who are able to reflect on their learning during the course and recount their own experiences of the Maltese language and interactions with the local community. Results show that participants were generally highly-motivated to learn the language and successfully complete the course. The participants were able to reflect on the course and discuss the aspects they found enjoyable, relevant and interesting such as the themes and topics, the emphasis on speaking practice and the overall lessons with their trainers. They were also able to make some recommendations for future cohorts such as the need for more flexibility, smaller groups, more course time and more focus on grammatical aspects. In terms of exposure, the participants reported varied levels of interaction with the community which are largely dependent on locality of residence, type of employment, the proficiency in the language and willingness to communicate.
