Abstract: This paper highlights the perceptions of children in foster care and in residential care in Malta. For this study, twenty-one children between the age of nine and fifteen were matched on age, length of time in care and reason for admission. Four of the children in foster care refused to take part in the study, but the responses of the open-ended questions of all children in residential care were reported. A revised version of the Social Climate Scale (Heal, 1973; Colton 1987) was used and the Wilcoxon Npar test applied to compare the scores. Aspects related to strictness, caretaker support, satisfaction, and behaviour were perceived more positively in the foster home environment.
