Abstract: Worldwide the threat to thousands of plants continues at an unrelenting pace. A decade ago, it was estimated that as much as 10% of the world's flora would be on the verge of extinction by the year 2000. As the new millennium approaches it seems that the situation has not improved in a good number of countries. Although efforts are made to safeguard threatened species, new threats arise as a result of direct or indirect human activity. If we consider the local situation, out of 900 plant species recorded in Malta, a staggering one third (328) are recorded by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC, Cambridge UK) as being under some form of threat.
