Abstract: Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the older population can cause adverse effects including hypomagnesaemia, pneumonia and fractures. Hospitalisation presents an opportunity for assessing PPI appropriateness, and dose reduction or drug discontinuation may be considered.
