Abstract: A suitable and generally acceptable designation of this fever has long been the subject of discussion. The disease is one of those that have been labelled with a multitude of names : thirteen appellations have been given to it on account of its supposed resemblance to typhoid or malaria ; the character of its fever and the symptoms it presents gave rise to fourteen other designations and nine more were derived from the conditions which from time to time were considered to favour its prevalence. From the localities in which it was recognized and studied it came to be called Mediterranean Fever, Malta Fever, Italian Fever, Neapolitan Fever, Rock or Gibraltar Fever, Cyprus Fever, Crimean Fever, etc.
