| Abstract: | This exploratory research study focuses on several explanations that aim to define a violent offence and ‘Modus Operandi’. This study sought to explore the Modus Operandi (MO) of violent offenders specifically through the eyes of the participants who are well versed in the area being researched. This study also aimed to identify some of the characteristics that are perceived to be commonly found among violent offenders, primarily including temperament and aggression. Furthermore, the research project also aimed to shed light on negative events, particularly childhood trauma, family dysfunction and mental health issues that might have been contributing factors leading to the commission of a violent offence. A qualitative approach was considered as the most appropriate research design for this research project. In this regard, five face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with experienced professionals in the field. Though modest in number, such interviews have resulted in some interesting findings such as combining life experiences together with other factors primarily biological and/or psychological factors, that may be considered as contributing factors to the commission of a violent offence. Moreover, on Modus Operandi, participants mentioned that such a process is considered to be a learned behaviour, gained through observation. Such findings have been compared to other pertinent literature and theories such as the Social Learning Role Theory and the Frustration-aggression Theory. Following the exploration of literature, data collection and analysis, the final part of the research project focused on presenting some recommendations that can be considered as beneficial for persons working directly with violent offenders. Such research shall focus on the qualities of violent offenders and emphasize the nature aspect of violent offenders that impact the commission of crime. |
