Maltesisch: sprachgeschichtliche und areallinguistische aspekte

Abstract

The subject of this contribution presents Maltese as a language made up of different language layers that differ from several language or dialect groups. In the first part, the historical events that led to the stratifications from different geographic zones is presented. These stratifications are illustrated by examples from the Maltese language. In the second part, the paper demonstrates how through linguistic geography - or Bartoli areal linguistics - one can superimpose the strata concretely on maps. An areal linguistic consideration of Maltese, which necessarily includes the entire Arabic area and partly the Romance (Italian) area, has thus far not been undertaken.
