Abstract: Wind energy is one of the RE sources that is presently contributing towards sustainable management of energy resources on a global level. Studies and other activities to help foster a better understanding of this proven technology’s prospects in the local context have been carried out at the Institute for Energy Technology of the University of Malta. This work delved into various aspects linked to the quality of the islands’ wind resource and into other cross-cutting issues that are generally associated with wind energy conversion systems subject to specific characteristics of this unique central Mediterranean archipelago. This paper outlines these activities and presents selected results from the ongoing research programme.
