Abstract

This XXIXth volume of the International Yearbook of Education constitutes a new chapter in the history of the evolution of education throughout the world, begun with the first volume, published in 1933. The 90 national reports on educational developments in 1966-1967 published in the present volume all merit special attention by virtue of the abundance and interest of the information they contain. A brief introduction highlights the main trends which have characterized the past year. In addition to the quantitative tables concerning the financing of education and the numbers of pupils and teachers in the various types of education, there are comparisons, as last year, of the modifications affecting the structure and organization of education, curricula, syllabuses and methods and teaching staff. In addition to their annual report, the Ministries of Education had been requested to supply information on the implementation of Recommendation No . 34 on the access of women to education, adopted by the Conference on Public Education in 1952. The information sent by about 40 countries is summarized in a special section which precedes the countries' monographs. The list of leading officials in the Ministries of Education of the various countries, brought up to date each year is intended to facilitate contact between principal education authorities throughout the world. The statistical tables at the end of the volume have been supplied as usual by the Statistics Division of UNESCO. They are complementary to the comparative tables in the first part of the volume but do not duplicate them.
