Abstract: The Order of St. John of Jerusalem is associated mainly with the two hundred and sixty eight years of its political sovereignty in the Maltese Islands. This Holy Order, which had its origin in the far-off days of the First Crusade, was destined to play an important part in Maltese History in an epoch which saw the final phase of the long struggle between the Cross and the Crescent. This centuries-old battle for supremacy came to a head with the eclipse of the powerful Turkey of Soliman the Magnificent, whose armies were crippled at the Siege of Malta and whose fleet was completely shattered 'by Don John of Austria at the Battle of Lepanto.
