| Abstract: | Your Excellency, The Honourable the Rector, Ladies and Gentlemen: Some months ago I made a promise. At least, I am told so. The occasion I have quite forgotten, and I can accept it only by an act of faith. I have it on the authority of the Rector of this University that I once promised to deliver a lecture. I cannot imagine myself making such a promise ; and during the task of preparation I have wondered at it more and more. However, with all the authority of his high office, and in his kindest possible manner, he prevailed upon me on a recent occasion to redeem this promise. So it comes about that for a strange lapse, the memory of which has faded from me, I pay the penalty this day. [Excerpt] |
