Citation: Portelli, R. (2023). Patsy Rodenburg and Kristen Linklater: a comparative study of vocal practices (Bachelor's dissertation).
Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the practice of the voice for theatre purposes. To discuss this topic, the work of voice coach Patsy Rodenburg is considered, especially her approach to what she terms the ‘three circles of energy’ that deal with a personal voice, a dialogical voice, and a public voice. To further understand how the voice can be applied to theatrical use, the discussion also includes an overview of Kristen Linklater’s approach to vocal work, in particular her use of imagination as a form of physical expression for the voice. Exploring these two psychophysical approaches enables the identification of some recurring themes and motifs, especially with reference to text-based performances and physical theatre. Reading Rodenburg and Linklater in the light of each other, therefore, comparing and contrasting their approaches, facilitates an assessment of how different performers use their voices to communicate their art as well as how the audiences receive it.
