| Abstract: | This study attempted to identify the psychosocial implications of being diagnosed with a food allergy for emerging adults. Six participants who had at least one type of food allergy were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. This was done in order to understand the participants’ perceptions and experiences of living with a food allergy. The data was then analysed through reflexive thematic analysis, whereby three main themes emerged, along with their respective subthemes. Results showed that all participants experienced a negative impact on their quality of life after receiving a food allergy diagnosis. In addition to this, the participants’ interpersonal relationships were significantly affected by this condition. Participants also reported higher levels of anxiety and stress while trying to adapt to their new lifestyle. The challenges of having a food allergy were also brought to light during the interviews and it was concluded that many participants faced similar challenges. The limitations of this study were noted and as a conclusion to this study, recommendations for practice and future research were provided. |
