Abstract: The dog ownership phenomenon is an experience which yields significant effect on the persons wellbeing. This study seeks to understand the psychological experiences dog owners face, together with associated influencing factors. The research was conducted through a qualitative lens, with six semi-structured interviews, having adult dog owners with three or more years of experience. The data was analysed through interpretative phenomenological analysis. The principal findings revealed the importance and uniqueness of the dog-owner bond, the various responsibilities that come with ownership, the way in which dogs are integrated within the family, their therapeutic benefits, together with factors which contribute towards a satisfied owner. This study highlights the diverse effects dogs have on their owner’s psychological well-being. It also paves the way for further study on the psychological effects’ ownership brings and how dogs could be used to aid individuals with mental health.
