| Abstract: | Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women in their reproductive age, with symptoms ranging from irregular menstrual cycles to infertility. The impact of PCOS on women's wellbeing and quality of life (QoL) can be significant. They may encounter psychological distress, including anxiety and poor self-esteem. This qualitative research study aimed to explore the experience of women with PCOS from the perspective of six healthcare professionals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three doctors, a consultant, a trainee health psychologist, and a psychotherapist. These have worked with a range of PCOS patients, including women of all ages, women trying to conceive, and couples. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and the data collected was analysed through Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), whereby five global themes and twelve sub-themes emerged. The global themes identified were: conception and pregnancy problems; psychosocial implications; the couple's relationship; and managing and coping with PCOS. Most participants argued that because of the unpleasant symptoms of PCOS, women experience a poor QoL. Findings also revealed that couples dealing with PCOS tend to have lower intimate satisfaction. Participants emphasised the importance of managing and coping with PCOS. They presented several management strategies, including medications, treatments, lifestyle changes, and therapy. Since women with PCOS experience higher levels of psychological distress, findings suggested that family and professional support is necessary. Finally, since PCOS affects women differently and holistically, this research study highlighted the importance of adopting a tailored, multidisciplinary approach when managing PCOS. From professionals' experience, awareness and education about this condition are essential. |
