Address delivered before the members of the Institute

Abstract

On Friday last, (the evening appointed for the customary lecture, being the following one) notices were issued by the Secretary, Henry lnnes Esq. that the Right Honble the Earl of Carlisle would address the meeting. In consequence, at the appointed hour, one of the largest assemblies we remember to have seen in the Hall, had met together, fully crowding the room; and many were obliged to put up with standing room, without the door. Under such circumstances, our report must naturally be an in complete one, but we have endeavoured to string together such a detail or the proceedings, as, we trust, will convey a tolerable idea to our absent friends.

A contemporary, charges Mr. lnnes with "profuse adulation, of the noble Earl - adding that its absence would doubtless have been more pleasing to his Lordship. and more satisfactory to the audience we shall not enter on the question beyond a should remark, that it is difficult to withold compliment to talent, such as his Lordship possesses-talent of the highest literary character, that has met with deserved tribute of praise, wherever his Lordship has appeared. And we think the Earl of Carlisle deserved all that the Secretary said of him;and so also thought the assembled audience.
