| Abstract: | Mortlake,
The Epiphany, 1877. My Dear Lord, With very substantial assistance from Rev. Mr. Goddard, I finished just before Christmas the year's work of Examining the Schools of the Diocese, in regard to their general character, and their condition as to Religious Instruction. Higher Schools.-There are now 39 Upper and Middle Schools that come under Diocesan Inspection, containing 1,642 Pupils. This is an increase of 5 Schools and 69 Pupils over the numbers of last year ; and I have scarcely met in any of these with anything like neglect of Religious Instruction, although there are certainly cases in which it might be more systematically and skilfully given. Elementary Schools.- Of Elementary Schools there are now 142, besides 6 Orphanages and Industrial Schools. This is a net increase of four over the number of last year. The most important additions have been the new Boys' Schools at Dover and East Greenwich, the Infants' School at Portsea, and the Mixed Schools at Sandhurst, and of S. Joseph's, Bermondsey. Besides these the little Schools of Christchurch and Tenterden have been re-opened, and separate departments have been made for Infants at Greenwich, and the French Mission of Guernsey. But against these less important additions, must be placed the equally unimportant losses of Ashford, Stoke, and Ventnor, where the Schools have been closed, and the small Infants' School at S. Mary Magdalen's, Brighton, and at Winchester, which aTe no longer separate departments. [Excerpt] |
