Abstract

Sermon.

According to thy ability be merciful: if thou have much, give abundantly ; if thou have little, take care, even so, to bestow willingly a little. Tobias iv. 8, 9.

Such was the advice, beloved and respected Christians, of a truly fond and enlightened parent to his only child, the dearest object of his affections in this world. Educated himself in that school which points out infallibly to man his duty and best interests, and teaches him to look up to God as the bestower of every good and perfect gift, he could devise no means more efficacious, whereby his son might store up to himself a good reward for the day of necessity-whereby he might acquire great confidence before the most high God-whereby, in fine, he might be saved from misery and sin and darkness and death, than that recommended in the text :
