Abstract: A travelled American once remarked to the writer that the result of his repeated visits to Europe had been to remove much of that tendency to national self-glorification of which his countrymen generally were not unjustly accused; but, admitting the superiority in many respects of the 0Id World over the New, he frill considered that an American had the right to claim for his country the forermost place in the civilization of the world, since he might assert that there was no native-born citizen of the United States who could not read and write : a boast which no other country could truthfully proclaim...
