Guide to the National Library of Malta

Abstract

Situated in the centre of Valletta, the National Library of Malta is one of the major treasures that enrich the Maltese Islands. The building is a gem in its own right, complementing the elegance of Valletta buildings erected during the 268-year rule of the Order of St. John over the Islands. When stepping inside one must feel as though entering a shrine, for the National Library of Malta houses an extremely precious historical treasure in all the documents, collections, books and other material found within its walls. These are of great importance not only for the Maltese Islands' history and development during the last millennium, but also for the evaluation of European and Mediterranean history during the same period. For this reason it is essential that all documents are well preserved for posterity and safeguarded from all possible damage. Works to ensure this have been continuously carried out over the years but the most recent development in this area was the installation of a Fire Protection and Suppression System, which was inaugurated this year. The need for a booklet giving information about the Library has long been felt since Maltese citizens and foreigners come to visit the Library and carry out research. Inevitably, in their different ways, they request information regarding the Library's history and treasures. Hence the Library administration's decision to publish this GUIDE TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MALTA hoping that all visitors and' readers will find it interesting and that it will enhance in them the desire to gain more knowledge from the Library's collections.
