Abstract: ‘Bambinella’ pears are a small variety of Pyrus communis that are native to the Maltese islands which are harvested during the summer. The objective of this study is to characterize a few quality parameters for ‘Bambinella’ pears during their optimal harvesting time as well as to run trials to test the effectiveness of post-harvest treatments at delaying the onset of spoilage during storage. The pre-harvest maturity indicators for ‘Bambinella’ pears were found to be; flesh firmness of 75-100 N, soluble solids content of 12-17% and titratable acidity of 0.1-0.15%. None of the treatment methods used were found to be effective at reducing spoilage of ‘Bambinella’ pears during cold storage.
