Abstract: Aims: The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of parents/caregivers’ of the child’s oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in their asthmatic adolescents residing in Malta. It also aimed at assessing the awareness of parents/caregivers on their children’s asthma. Methodology This cross-sectional study was carried out by first translating and validating a questionnaire tool (P-CPQ) into the Maltese language. An additional section focused on asthma questions. The questionnaire was made available as an online version. The data collected was analysed using IBM SPSS for inferences to be drawn. Results: A pilot study showing validation and reliability for the Maltese translation of the P-CPQ was demonstrated by significant correlation coefficents (r= 0.6 and 0.8; p <0.001) with the English P-CPQ. 79 subjects completed questionnaires. The findings suggested that there are no seasonal differences in asthma. A statistical difference in asthma between genders and QoL was recorded (p=0.011). Overall, 64% of parents reported that their child has been suffering with a dry mouth and 43% with oral health problems. Additionally, lack of parents/caregivers awareness of their childs medication was demonstrated. Conclusion: Parental awareness on their children’s asthma and its respective treatment is low. Educational interventions targeted at parents are required to improve the level of knowledge on asthma, its effects on the mouth and the child’s quality of life.
