For forensic institutes to effectively perform various tasks in relation to a crime scene investigation, there has always been the need for certain technology to be utilised to analyse and document the crime scene. This dissertation examines the main science and digital technology used by forensic institutes traditionally, the leap in technology that led forensic science and technology to the present, as well as the prospective future. Data pertaining to the subject was collected through literature review, as well as interviews conducted to several experts from different criminal investigation departments within the Malta Police Force. Upon analysis, this study depictsthat especially in recent years, there has been a rapid advancement in technology which enables crime scene investigations to be analysed in greater depth which leads the outcome to be more efficient and effective. The implementation of high-end technology has also impacted the procedures and methodologies used by crime scene investigators to adapt and streamline the investigation. All this must adhere to quality standards and best practices set by the International Standards Organisation and other recognised entities so that forensic services globally process forensic evidence in parallelum.
