The perceptions and attitudes of youth towards poverty in Malta

Abstract

This research investigates the attitudes and perceptions of youth residing in Malta regarding the issue of poverty. Poverty has emerged as a significant concern in contemporary societies, and given that the youth will lead the future, it is imperative to examine their role in addressing poverty. Consequently, the primary objective of this study is to explore the correlation between young people's perceptions of poverty and their willingness to participate in efforts aimed at tackling poverty. A qualitative research approach was employed to gather and analyse data. The findings presented are derived from interviews with seven participants who fall under the category of youth. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis method. The results indicate that most young people define poverty as a shortage of food and money, and their views on poverty are influenced considerably by media messages. Additionally, financial mismanagement and abuse were identified as the leading causes of poverty. However, despite being aware of the issue, young people were hesitant to contribute, citing their lack of resources and political influence as well as personal concerns that take priority over poverty-related issues. The outcomes of this study suggest that policymakers can leverage youth's perspectives on addressing poverty by designing awareness raising campaigns and strategies that cater to young people's lifestyle, skills, and abilities. Such programmes can alleviate youths’ sense of helplessness and the perceived lack of capacity to make a significant impact in poverty alleviation efforts.
