Abstract: The occasion which calls us together, namely, the 700th anniversary of S. Thomas of Canterbury's martyrdom, is one awakening so many memories and so various, that I feel oppressed and saddened, if sadness is possible to a Christian, as I approach the subject on which I have to dilate: oppressed because of the great number of thoughts which rush into the mind while it glances back through the obscurity of so many centuries, and reviews the history of this ancient seat of religion and recalls its manifold vicissitudes : saddened because after so many lessons the great cause for which S.
