Abstract: This study explores the inner conversation of a therapist in couple therapy, with a specific focus on gender issues. It explores the therapist’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences during particular moments with a heterosexual couple. As a researcher, I observed and recorded four therapy sessions. Following the observations, sessions were held with the therapist to discuss salient moments, giving the space for the therapist to reflect on such moments. Drawing from the Inner Conversation Method and the Interpersonal Process Recall, the therapist was able to re-watch, recall, and discuss issues pertaining to gender during her therapy sessions. Through Thematic Analysis, three major themes have emerged that include: Talking about gender in couple therapy: Important contexts, The therapist’s personal stories and biases around gender that influence therapy, and Synchronicity between the personal and professional voice facilitates couple therapy. The study includes recommendations for future research and practice.
