| Abstract: | The aim of the study was to gain knowledge about the perspective of students attending the University of Malta on dating violence. The purpose of the study was to discover what university students perceive as dating violence, which factors university students perceive as risk and protective factors of dating violence, and the viewpoint and level of awareness of university students regarding dating violence and support services provided in Malta. This study is a quantitative study, and data collection was gathered by using questionnaires that were distributed via the Esims portal. Interesting findings were that the respondents' perspective might have been influenced by visible signs of power and control, and abusive behaviour, rather than consequences that leave a psychological impact. It was highlighted that a high percentage of respondents perceived abusive situations involving same-sex couples as definitely dating violence. Another interesting finding was that lack of anger management, alcohol and drug use, and sexism were the most commonly indicated risk factors for dating violence. Despite a high percentage of respondents indicating that dating violence is common in Malta, it was clear that the respondents perceived that there is not enough knowledge and awareness regarding dating violence. Recommendations to further attain a better-quality service were provided. Greater awareness about dating violence was recommended, especially through prevention programmes. It was also indicated that professionals working within this sector may be given workshops and training courses regarding inclusivity to make professional services more inclusive and provide better support for victims. |
