Abstract: Homosexuality was decriminalised in Malta in 1973 through a bill that was put forward to amend the criminal code so as to abolish adultery and homosexual acts in private. Blackmailing was common and the legislature and the Church enacted this law to safeguard homosexuals in the country. A Civil Unions Act in 2014, granted same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as marriage couples.
