Abstract: The study sets out the main characteristics of object marking (OM) in Maltese and considers the same phenomenon in Arabic and In Semitic, where it is present. However, .there is an important difference between OM in Maltese and in Arabic: in the latter OM tends to occur only together with another syntactic phenomenon, namely, the presence of an agreement pronoun. In Maltese, on the other hand, the two cat occur independently of each other. At this point attestations of OM in Romance are considered. The paper tends to regard OM in Maltese not as the result of an internal development within Semitic but as due to Romance adstratal influence.
