| Abstract: | This research explored the risk factors associated with violent crimes in young offenders. A qualitative approach was deemed fit for this study to explore if childhood physical abuse is a precursor to violent crimes in young offenders. Using semistructured interviews, five professionals working directly with young offenders were recruited, mainly; youth workers, psychologists, and social workers. The participants were able to share their experiences of working with young offenders. Data was analysed using thematic analysis which allowed for the emergence of three themes; The research highlights that abuse is not the only risk factor associated with violent crimes. The study also sheds light on professionals' interventions currently being made and the future needs of staff and service providers. This study seeks to open possibilities for future research related to this field to understand better the implications of young offenders and childhood adversities. Youth work gives the opportunity for professionals to engage closely with young people, therefor, working in a multidisciplinary approach is beneficial for the service user. |
