Challenges experienced by young Maltese mothers

Abstract

This study explores the nuanced experiences of young mothers and captures their perspective on the challenges they face during their journey into motherhood. The research highlights the multifaceted nature of these challenges, encompassing the physical, emotional, social, and economic dimensions. The researcher interviewed six young mothers using semi-structured interviews. The findings show that young women struggle with pregnancy and postpartum recovery when they do not have proper assistance. Emotionally, the participants described feeling overwhelmed and stressed out while dealing with identity redefinition as they balanced their own personal growth with the responsibilities of motherhood. The participants highlighted the necessity for supporting communities and networks to reduce loneliness and enhance wellbeing. By presenting the voices and experiences of young mothers themselves, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of their challenges and needs. The insights from the semi-structured interviews emphasize the importance of tailored support systems, policy interventions, and community programs that address the unique circumstances faced by young mothers. Ultimately, this research advocates for a more holistic and empathetic approach to addressing the challenges of young motherhood, fostering an environment in which both mothers and their children can thrive.
