Abstract: The residential care scenario in Malta continues to evolve. In light of the recent enactment of the Minor Protection (Alternative Care) Act (Chapter 602), this research set out to explore the extent to which the needs of young people in residential care are being met. The study used the semi-structured qualitative interview method to obtain relevant data from eleven professionals who work directly in the care field. The findings suggest that professionals face various challenges which do not always allow them to meet the needs of minors living in alternative care. The main themes discussed were the need of young people in care, the transition to adulthood, the impact of the new legislation, the lack of resources and the voice of the child in residential care.
