Abstract: On 31 January 1999, Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered a speech before the World Economic Forum, Davos, in which he launched what was to become known as "'the Global Compact". In this speech, the Secretary-General challenged the business community to observe nine principles.
