Abstract: Criminal Investigations have always attracted interest and speculation. The internet's exponential growth has brought unprecedented opportunities for communication and information-sharing and a darker side that harbours various illicit activities, including child sexual exploitation (CSE). This study presents a concise exploration of the complex challenge posed by the dark aspects of the internet in the context of combatting CSE. It delves into the dark nature of the dark web, which enables predators to exploit vulnerable minors while remaining anonymous. This study also highlights how the digital realm provides enough space for predators to initiate and carry on victimising children through manoeuvres such as manipulation, coercion, and sharing explicit content. This research delves into the darker realms, focusing on CSE, utilizing face-to-face semi-structured interviews with diverse members of the Cyber Crime Unit within the Malta Police Force. The obtained results unearthed substantial gaps in the Force's readiness and resources. Analysis was done by using Thematic analysis, education emerged as a main theme and a critical tool in both preventing and addressing CSE. By adopting a culture of digital literacy and empowerment, children can recognise potential threats and ask for the right help when in need. Recommendations drawn from these revelations underscore the imperative for a multifaceted approach involving cross-sector collaboration, international cooperation, and continuous adaptation to combat the ever-evolving landscape of internet-enabled crimes against children. In conclusion, this research serves as a clarion call to policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and stakeholders to acknowledge and address the disconcerting discrepancies between existing knowledge and on-the-ground realities. Only through proactive measures and a collective effort can the dark alleys of the internet be illuminated, safeguarding the most vulnerable in our society from exploitation and harm.
