| Abstract: | The dissertation explores presence in theatre, specifically with reference to the voice. The concept of presence is approached from different angles, including vocal and physical embodiment, the mind-body phenomenon, technological intervention, and even its ‘lack’. The study contributes to the knowledge of presence in theatre by examining various theatre practitioners’ methods, particularly that of voice coach Patsy Rodenburg. The research particularly emphasises the transformative potential of Second Circle presence as conceptualised in Rodenburg’s Three Circles model. The circles represent different states: introspective focus, bidirectional connection, and untargeted projection. Rodenburg’s methodology focuses on developing vocal control and resonance, incorporating physical warm-ups, movement exercises, understanding of breath and energy, as well as momentto-moment awareness practices. Applying the Three Circles method to scene analysis and character development can also enhance the portrayal of a character. Insight garnered from this study illuminates factors that contribute to the formation of stage presence as well as to deepen our understanding of theatrical performance as a transformative agent. |
