Abstract: On the occassion of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare's sonnets Professor Oliver Friggieri was invited to participate in a commemorative collective publication of translations of those sonnets. He contributed twelve translated into Maltese. The final part of the essay focusses on those translations. The early sections deal with aspects of the history of literary translation and of poetry translation in particular, there follows a history of the evolution of the sonnet form and its movement into many languages, and the final part addresses the translation of Friggieri's twelve of Shakespeare's sonnets into Maltese.
