Abstract: Two years after the surrender of the French garrison commanded by General Belgrand de Vaubois on September 5, 1800, the Treaty of Amiens of 1802 stated that Malta was to be relinquished to the Order of St John but under Sicilian protection. However, Britain was reluctant to leave the island due to its strategic importance in view of its plans to establish itself in the Mediterranean, and to counter and obstruct Russian expansion in the region.
