Abstract: The events which shook Europe in the late 18th century had not spared Malta. The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars had impoverished the Order of the Knights of St John, with many of its commandories being sequestered by the French. The Order's role in fighting the enemies of Christendom had long ceased and many Knights had fallen into a mischievous and lazy life. The events which followed, resulting in the surrendering of Malta to Napoleon and the Order's expulsion, are well known and have been written about on countless occasions. The French were not meant to keep Malta and surrendered after being blockaded for two long and eventful years.
