| Abstract: | The events in Malta leading to the capitulation of the Order of St John to Napoleon's army en-route to Egypt, the revolt of the Maltese against the French garrison commanded by General Belgrand de Vaubois and the request of the Maltese for Britain's help while they laid siege to the capital for two eventful years, have been repeatedly recalled in many history books. The French finally surrendered on 5th September 1800 after a siege lasting two eventful years. The Treaty of Amiens of 1802 noted Malta to be returned to the Order of St John but under Sicilian protection, but Britain was already firmly rooted on the island and fully aware of the strategic importance of the island and of plans to establish itself in the Mediterranean and obstruct any possibility of Russian expansion in this region. |
