| Abstract: | This chapter explores the realities of the participation, representation and visibility of women in news structures and current affairs programs in Malta. Current top editorial positions are assessed in terms of gender representation, whilst the four primary current affairs discussion programs on state television are analyzed in terms of the gender ratio of guests. In spite of the fact that women tend to outnumber men when it comes to training programs and instruction, the industry is still male-dominated, and very few women make the grade to top decision-making posts. The main argument being put forward is that a gender balanced newsroom, at all levels of decision-making structures, as well as a significant and visible mass of women participating in the national debate, will result in society that is being more accurately represented. Ultimately, there needs to be a commitment by all stakeholders to ensure fair representation, since society as a whole would benefit from the elimination of discrimination. |
