Abstract: This dissertation delves into some of the underlying suicide risk factors prevalent in most prisons in the twenty-first century, linking them with risk at the Corradino Correctional Facility. By using a qualitative research approach, data was gathered from various publicly accessible sources namely local news reports, to analyse cases of completed and attempted suicides within the facility. Moreover, a thematic analysis provided a comprehensive understanding of some of the underlying causes and contributing factors to suicidal behaviour among inmates. The findings highlight a broad spectrum of interconnected elements, including mental health challenges made worse by the harsh realities of imprisonment, the emotional toll of legal proceedings, systemic deficiencies in monitoring and screening processes, and the issue of substance abuse within the prison environment. These combined factors significantly increase inmates' vulnerability to suicidal ideation and attempts. Furthermore, the study advocates for immediate systemic reforms, emphasising the importance of early detection mechanisms and robust support systems designed to address the needs of incarcerated individuals. Additionally, some of the recommendations include implementing early mental health interventions, reforming legal procedures, and improving monitoring and rehabilitation programs. Ultimately, this research not only sheds light on the complex issue of inmate suicides within prison settings but also serves as a call to action for concerted efforts towards systemic change aimed at fostering the overall well-being and mental health of incarcerated populations.
