Abstract: This study examines the complexity of homicides by analysing three prominent cases: The murder of Giulia Cecchettin and Alesha McPhail and the terrorist attacks which took place in Île-de-France on the 15th of January, also known as the Charlie Hebdo Shootings. The comparison analysis of criminal behaviour reveals common patterns, diverse modus operandi and different victim profiles. Moreover, European homicide rate trends are analysed, patterns are observed, and even with the overall decrease in homicide rates, challenges remain in specific cases. The case studies analysed reveal the complex human behaviour of personal responsibility and societal pressure that need to be reinforced through cultivating social cohesion and implementing effective social controls. Moreover, the issue that globalization contributes to the spread of extremist ideologies is highlighted, as well as the necessity for international cooperation in reducing these violent crimes and the unrelenting extremist radicalization that Europe is facing. This study, together with others of similar nature, intends to develop an understanding on the reality of homicide, and contribute information which is useful in the total strategy for reducing crime and reinforcing social cohesion.
