| Abstract: | This dissertation explores the media coverage of sexual violence survivors and perpetrators, particularly in the context of the #MeToo movement, by examining high-profile cases such as Chanel Miller and Harvey Weinstein. It investigates how these narratives influence public perceptions and societal attitudes towards sexual violence. The research utilises a qualitative approach, including thematic and discourse analysis, to scrutinise media narratives and their impact on the representation of survivors and perpetrators. The study reveals that media coverage has evolved to more empathetic portrayals of survivors while also highlighting a shift in the accountability of perpetrators, largely influenced by the #MeToo movement. However, it also uncovers persistent challenges, such as indirect victim blaming and the underrepresentation of survivor voices in media narratives. This dissertation calls for a reevaluation of media practices, advocating for a more informed, sensitive, and ethical approach to addressing sexual violence in the media. The findings emphasize the need for ongoing scrutiny of media’s role in shaping public discourse on sexual violence and propose recommendations for future research, including the potential of digital platforms to amplify survivor voices and challenge prevailing rape myths. This study contributes to the broader discourse on the ethics of representation and the responsibility of the media in influencing societal consciousness and fostering a culture of accountability and empathy towards sexual violence survivors. |
