The incarcerated other half : professional perspectives on challenges faced by partners of incarcerated individuals

Abstract

There is limited evidence available on the experience of partners of jailed individuals; nonetheless, recent data indicates that millions of families have a member who is in prison. This dissertation examines the experiences and difficulties encountered by partners of incarcerated persons, as seen through the eyes of professionals who have knowledge in this area and have direct engagement with these partners. The study examines the distinct challenges, requirements, and support networks necessary for partners of those who are incarcerated. This research seeks to elucidate the effects of imprisonment on relationships, particularly when those involved have children, by conducting interviews and surveys with experts such as forensic psychologists, probation officials, and an NGO chairman. This dissertation aims to get insights into the most effective ways to help partners of jailed individuals by analysing the viewpoints of specialists in the field. Furthermore, the study aims to raise awareness about potential improvements to laws, regulations, and services for partners of jailed individuals. Additionally, it provides policy suggestions that may enhance the delivery of quality services in this region.
