Vi jew Va? : l-ewwel serje (programmi 1 - 25)

Abstract

In the publication, Vi jew Va?, the researcher undertook the research, presentation, and production of a series of 100 radio programmes broadcast on a local radio station in Malta (Cremona, 2021–2023). This initiative is underpinned by a robust theoretical framework that draws upon multimodal discourse analysis (Kress, 2010; Jewitt, 2016) and constructivism.

Constructivist theory, as articulated by foundational theorists such as Piaget (1972) and Vygotsky (1978), suggests that individuals actively construct their knowledge and through this construction they can make informed choices rather than acting randomly. This sheds light on the emphasis of the role of agency in the learning process. In this process, Brunner (1996), adds the aspect of discovery learning which requires the individual to take a central role in his/her own learning. With this personal role in one’s learning, authors such as Hmelo-Silver (2004) emphasize also the importance of the role of social interaction and collaborative learning in knowledge construction. All these constructivist (i.e. socio-constructivist and cognitive) insights align well with the objectives of the radio programme series.

Research aims 1. empower listeners to exercise agency when doing their choices linked to the diverse topics discussed during the radio programme series. 2. facilitate knowledge construction for listeners in navigating everyday decisions.
