Abstract: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a complex and multifaceted issue often exacerbated by alcohol use. This qualitative study aimed to describe and analyse the perspective and experiences of professionals regarding the intricate relationship between IPV and alcohol use within the Maltese context. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight professionals working in fields related to IPV and substance use. Findings revealed a consensus among participants that alcohol increases the likelihood of IPV occurrence, but it is not the sole causal factor. A complex interplay of factors contributes to IPV, including pre-existing aggressive tendencies, which can be heightened by alcohol consumption. Alcohol may also serve as a coping mechanism for victims, offering temporary relief but potentially increasing the victims’ vulnerability to further IPV. Participants highlighted a significant lack of awareness and knowledge regarding alcohol-related IPV among both victims and the general public, as well as a disconnection between alcohol and IPV in social work education and practice. The study emphasises the need for increased awareness and knowledge about alcohol-related IPV among professionals, victims and the public. Recommendations include integrating alcohol related IPV education into professional training, public awareness campaigns, and improved collaboration between relevant services. Additionally, the importance of self-care practices, particularly supervision, for professionals working in the field is underscored to ensure ethical decision-making and prevent burnout.
